Whitehaven v Newcastle Thunder and other League 1 thoughts

Sunday afternoon saw Newcastle Thunder travel to Whitehaven to take on a team flying towards the top of the league. Thunder did score a try through Northumbria University student, Jake Dickinson with an interception which was converted by Alex Donaghy.

After that score took things to 6-6 Thunder then went in 42-6 down at half time and ultimately lost 66-6. Whitehaven as I said in my pre-match thoughts have re-built using the community game in Cumbria and this is working for them. They've had their financial difficulties in recent seasons and have budgeted on crowds of 500 this season so will be happy to have over that yesterday.

For Thunder, it's a case of being realistic and remembering where we've come from. Like anyone you see the negative comments but the majority of the fans get it. We've come from not having a club, to showing enough interest to have a club. The people involved do it for the love of the club and rugby league and they're genuinely good people. From what I've seen this season so far we have improved from last season despite the results. For me the biggest change is the other clubs have all improved and losing Cornwall, arguably our biggest rivals is a blow. But we must continue to get behind this group and Chris Thorman.

If you're sat there wondering what you can do then there's new training kit from APX out. For what it's worth, I like the APX stuff and think it's better than the Macron kit. If you haven't yet, get down to Blaydon and get behind the team against Goole, it's a friendly set up down at Blaydon and every time I go I'm made to feel welcome. We all know how big Magic Friday is for us and if you can get down, if you can't then spread the clubs social media posts and encourage friends to get down to the Workington game. It's tough for this group at the moment and our support is appreciated.

League 1 round up

I might give up on the whole prediction thing after one week, I had wins for Dewsbury, Keighley and Rochdale. How wrong was I!

Hurricanes had a really convincing win 46-12 over Dewsbury as they continue to set the early pace. Keighley conceded late points as they lost at home to Swinton. I really can't see it being too long till they come good in the league. Finally, Workington put in an impressive performance at Rochdale to take a 34-24 win.

In the main League 1 is such a competitive league and you can't predict what will happen every week.

Up next

Mine and many people's frustration is there's no League 1 game's next weekend, for Thunder this gives Chris Thorman some time with the squad. But from a supporters point of view another week off is a frustration!

Good Friday is the next game for Thunder as they make the trip to West Yorkshire to take on Dewsbury Rams at the Flair Stadium in a 15:00 kick off.
